Why Austin’s tech scene is a destination for new talent

With accolades piling up there seems to be no stopping the city of Austin’s tech scene. And, this year, aside from the record heat, the Austin tech scene is sizzling. It’s no secret that tech hubs are laying the groundwork and setting down roots all over the Austin metro area. Industry tech giants such as Dell, Apple, and IBM are leading the way. But, there’s also National Instruments, Oracle, HomeAway, and Indeed. And, let’s not forget about Amazon. The Austin area is still on the company’s short-list for its second headquarters.

However, Austin’s tech scene is not just attracting the major players. It’s also home to thousands of others. According to statistics published by the Austin Chamber of Commerce there are 6,500 tech employers in the Austin metro area. And, 5,500 are tech start-ups which has earned Austin the #2 spot on the Top 10 U.S. Cities for Entrepreneurs and Start Ups in 2018. Business.org publishes the annual list that considers factors such as the population of young adults ages 25 to 34 and their level of education. Other factors include local employment, cost of living, and the rate of start-up growth.

Austin tech hub continues to grow in 2018

For the size of Austin, the number of tech employers flooding the area is quite impressive. But, what’s equally impressive is that Austin’s cutting-edge tech scene continues to thrive and grow. And, this year was no exception. The city moved up from the #8 spot to #6 on CBRE’s list of Top 10 Tech Talent Markets in North America. And, here’s a few of the reasons why says CBRE. First, Austin’s tech talent labor pool is higher than the national average—7 percent compared to 3.5 percent. Second, Austin is home to the University of Texas which helps to provide an educated and quality labor pool. Third, over the last five years, the Austin tech market workforce grew by 20% which translates into 12,000 new workers.

Quality of life and affordability brings tech workers to Austin

However, another key factor fueling Austin’s rapid tech scene growth is its quality of life and affordability. Those markets ahead of Austin on CBRE’s list starting at the top spot include San Francisco, Seattle, Washington D.C., Toronto, and New York. There’s no doubt these cities are all great places to work. But, when you think of how much it will cost for you to live in one of them, well, you might consider moving somewhere else. When compared to these top-ranked metro areas, Austin remains very affordable. According to the Austin Relocation Guide, your hard-earned dollars stretch farther in Austin than in other cities with similar population numbers. Daily living expenses such as transportation, utilities, healthcare, services, and groceries cost less. The Guide’s article titled Cost of Living in Austin, TX is a great resource. But, let’s not forget about housing.

Even though San Francisco Bay is the reigning king of tech-talent, soaring home prices in the area are having an impact on the number of people relocating to other markets. And, no surprise here, one of those markets is Austin. Compared to San Francisco it costs 65 to 70 percent less to purchase a home in Austin. Though housing prices in Austin are rising, the future looks very bright according to a recent article published by the Austin American Statesman.
