How to Avoid Design Showroom Jitters

At Home, Design - Glory Spies - Aug 30, 2017

Design showroom survival

Congratulations you just signed the contract for your new Travisso home. You chose the model, the lot, and one of the most beautiful communities in Leander to reside in. Signing a contract for your new home is very exciting. There’s so many things to do and consider including a trip to your builder’s design showroom.

I can tell you one thing, the call from the design showroom to set up an appointment to make your home’s selections comes quickly. Expect a call about two to three weeks after you sign the contract. It happens fast. There’s a lot of people that find choosing their home’s selection difficult. However, it doesn’t have to be. You not only want to survive a trip to the design showroom but you want to come out victorious. Your goal is to successfully choose the colors and style that project your unique lifestyle and personality. When it comes to choosing your new home’s selections you can score a “V” in the victory column and get the exact style you want by being prepared.

First of all, the design showroom experience is usually a two part process. The first part of the process is choosing the materials and colors for the outside façade of your home. When it comes to your home’s outside selections typically you have to choose the type of masonry, outside lighting fixtures, and the color of your trim and garage doors. Your selections will depend on the model of your home. Remember, curb appeal is important. You want your new home to look as appealing on the outside as it is in the inside. And, of course, the second part of the process is choosing the inside selections of your home. But, there’s no need to stress if you follow a few simple tips.

Design Showroom tips and tricks

One thing you need to remember when choosing your home’s selections is that there’s always an opportunity to upgrade options. Before your first appointment decide what rooms in your new home are the most important and then spend your money there. This way you will know before you go what you want to upgrade. You will also know what items you don’t want to upgrade. If your kitchen is the most important room in the house to you, then show it. A show-stopping kitchen is an asset to any home. Setting a budget for upgrade can help you stay on track.

Before your first scheduled appointment, go to your builder’s design showroom. Think of this stage as window shopping. You are just looking to get a feel for what’s available. Walk around, bring a notepad with you, explore all the options and have fun. Write down those items and colors that catch your eye. Better yet, take a picture. What you’ll discover is a multitude of options–rows and rows of tiles, styles, carpeting selections, woods, appliances, and more.

Don’t rely only on website research. You can do your homework ahead of time by visiting large home appliance and kitchen superstores and flooring showrooms and warehouses. Talk to sales personnel and get a feel for the appliances appeal. Check out what’s new and trendy and what you are going to use and not use. Hone in on what you like. Home Depot, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Best Buy, Lowes, and Pirch are all great places to visit for a weekend homework assignment. And, when you aren’t under pressure it can be a whole lot of fun.

A few more tips and tricks

Gather ideas of those styles and items you like by scouring magazines and reading popular home decorating websites, visiting builder model homes and going to home tours. Cut out pictures and take photos. On your first visit to the showroom bring these items with you. They will help your designer get a sense of your style. After all, your designer’s goal is to help and guide your through the decision process.

When choosing your selections don’t forget that you can add interest to your home by choosing a variety of textures, patterns, and contrast. Though mixing styles and patterns can be tricky the payoff can be a one-of-a-kind custom look. Popular websites such as Pinterest, Houzz, and For Your Home has a multitude of articles and photos you can show your designer.

Again, one of the most important things to remember is to prepare, prepare, prepare. If you do, your design showroom experience can be both fun and rewarding.
