2018 Holiday Decorating Trends Popular Now

Lifestyle, Trending - Glory Spies - Nov 16, 2018

Let the holiday decorating season begin. After all, ‘tis the season to decorate. If you haven’t noticed big box home décor stores have been stocking shelves with holiday decorations and trimmings for months. Actually, as early as July in some cases. If you think about it there’s two reasons why this is a great thing. One, you can check out all the newest holiday trends before the season and plan accordingly. And, two, to provide incentive to buy early, the stores start to run 50 percent sales. Though, it is a little awkward buying Christmas decorations in the middle of summer. But, in a way it makes sense. Consumers no longer have to wait until the end of the season to buy their holiday decorations for the following year. You can buy them and use them this season.

There’s nothing like seasonal decorating. Every year I carefully unpack my Christmas decorations and immediately start to create my own little winter wonderland. It usually consists of a themed tree or two, a Christmas village, and decorating my fireplace mantle and dining room table. But, I am always on the look-out for new holiday decorations and ideas to make my space chic, trendy, and festive. Which, by the way, is the purpose of this blog. Holiday decorations just like the seasons come and fade away. They also go through an evolution all their own. What was popular last year, doesn’t necessarily mean it is trending this year. However, since the holidays is all about tradition, incorporating treasured decorations from years past is important. So, to add some new life to old decorations, or to try some new looks, here’s a few of our favorite 2018 holiday decorating ideas trending now.

A merry little Boho Christmas

Boho décor is back again this year. And, it’s easy to see why it’s so very popular. Its casual, relaxed, and cultural approach to decorating can be easily worked into any living space even during the holidays. To create a relaxed carefree environment, the mainstay of Boho décor, Martha Stewart Living suggests using fresh pine greens. Imagine how the scent of fresh pine smells around the holidays. Heavenly! Ditch the traditional wreath. Use dried branches and arrange in rustic centerpieces and bowls made of rattan or wood. Or, for a fun and unassuming look mix it up by incorporating the greens in vases in a multitude of different sizes and colors. Just don’t stop there, though. Decorate your tree with Boho ornaments and find some colorful, cozy rugs to complete the look.

Color, color, color

Red and green are definitely the traditional mainstay colors of holiday decorating. But, it doesn’t have to look dated. For a classic fresh look such as in our charming cover photo try adding a brightly colored holiday throw and white accessories. White vases, baskets, ornaments on the tree, and lanterns donned in red ribbons looks simple but beautiful. However, it’s ok to mix it up. HGTV has put together a great list of holiday color combos that will definitely give you a whole new perspective on seasonal decorating. Brown and green, parchment and white, brown and white, and turquois, white, and parchment are just a few to try this season. But, there’s so much more. You can also go bold and bright by using neon colors. And, did we mention that it’s oh so easy to make your own DIY ornaments. Just go to any local craft store and grab a few cans of paint and plain glass ornaments and let the creativity flow. Get the kids involved for a great fun afternoon project.

Decking the halls with Modern Farmhouse

Creating a Modern Farmhouse look for the holidays couldn’t be easier. That’s because it’s everywhere. And, the best place to gather ideas for this very popular style is on Pinterest. There’s literally hundreds of photos with tons of ideas for inspiration. Getting the Modern Farmhouse look is all about making your home feel warm, cozy, and rustic as soon as you walk in the door. So, start with your entrance way. To create the look use warm hues, baskets, black iron candlesticks, and silver tins arranged with greenery. And, don’t forget a few wood and metal farmhouse signs and plenty of candles. You can use the same elements for your fireplace mantle. A combination of white and parchment ornaments on a tree is both simple and stunning. However, it is also the perfect combination for both your dining table and giftwrap. Adding fresh greens and cinnamon sticks complete the look.

Pom-pom wreaths

So, here’s one trend that hasn’t been on my radar but does appear on several other blogs as one of this year’s hottest trends. These fun circles of colored pom-pom balls are the perfect complement to any Boho décor. Don’t have Boho chic décor? No problem. These trendy pom-pom wreaths made with fuzzy balls of yarn come in an assortment of colors and holiday shapes ideal for any decorating scheme. They are also very adorable. You can find them in most retail stores from Target to Anthropologie to Pier One Imports and more. Or, if you’re crafty, you can make your own.

Vintage holiday decorations

Real Simple defines vintage décor as a rich layered look that combines flea market finds and furniture designs from various time periods such as Victorian and 18th century French. It also combines a diverse collection of accessories, artwork, collected objects and handmade textiles. So, for a retro-inspired holiday use plenty of mercury vases, candleholders, glass ornaments in bright colors, and retro-inspired Santa figurines. Or, hang some vintage stockings and mittens from your fireplace for a large dose of holiday charm. There’s plenty of items on store shelves that can help you create your very own vintage Christmas.

From our home to yours we wish you a very merry holiday season!
