Lake Travis: The Ultimate Family Water Playground

Looking for a change from the new normal? Whatever your idea of the perfect staycation is, Lake Travis has it all and more. While many of us will most likely be staying close to home this summer, you can still get away from it all at Lake Travis. It’s, oh so close, but worlds away. If its family water fun and new adventures you’re seeking out, Lake Travis doesn’t disappoint. The 30-minute stress-free drive from Travisso is barely enough time for the kids to ask if you’re there yet. And is just another super reason why Lake Travis is the ideal “backyard” staycation. We have no doubt you’ll be visiting more than once and staying longer each time you go.

For those that still haven’t gotten around to visiting, it may be difficult to envision the lake’s enormous size. Lake Travis is 63.75 miles in length, 4.50 miles wide, has 271 miles of shoreline and covers 18,929 acres. Its crystal clear blue water entices water enthusiasts and adventurers from all over the state. And with the lake’s abundant shoreline you can stake out the perfect picnic or swimming spot and still enjoy a blissful day of fun in the sun. Take advantage of all Lake Travis has to offer. Dive in!

5 Lake Travis Water Adventures Worth the Trip

Rent a Boat

If your staycation dream is to spend the day on the lake in a boat, you’re in luck. Boat rentals are plentiful around the lake. For the relaxing types there are an ample amount of rental facilities that offer motorized fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks. But if you’re taking the party on the water, options abound. From houseboats to barges to pontoons, sailboats and tours, there is absolutely no shortage of small to large-sized water vessels to accommodate your celebration. Party boats need to be reserved so don’t forget to call ahead weeks in advance.

Fun Water Crafts that Get your Feet Wet

Floating on a boat not your style? Well, it’s not for everyone. To get your feet wet and stay active at the same time try Stand Up Paddling or more commonly referred to as just SUP. This fun one-person sport lets you take it at your own pace. And it’s a fantastic way to play in the water without requiring too much skill. However, beginners should spend some time learning a few basics. Other options abound. For those that are over 21 and have the need for speed, a jet ski will fill the bill. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned wakeboard veteran, a wakeboard boat offers hours of water fun for everyone

Swim in Lake Travis

Windy Point Park and Bob Wentz Park are two very popular swimming spots on the lake. The difference between the two is that Windy Point is privately owned while Bob Wentz is run by Travis County Parks. Both parks charge an entrance fee and have many additional amenities like boat ramp access and scuba diving that makes the fee well-worth it. The added benefit is that there are also fewer crowds. The Point at Bob Wentz Park is a small sandy peninsula with covered picnic areas and access to the water that is the ideal spot to hang out and relax for the day. Unfortunately as of this writing Bob Wentz Park remains closed due to Covid-19 until further notice.

Head to a Waterpark

Have a blast and make a big splash at Waterloo Adventures, a gigantic floating water park. This popular family staycation destination is a unique full-day lakeside getaway. Families flock to Waterloo Adventures to challenge their skills at the Floating Obstacle Course. Approximately two football fields in length, the course has something for everyone. Even landlubbers will find their niche. The day begins with a boat ride to Adventure Island. From there you can head to the obstacle course, hang out at the park’s private beach and enjoy unlimited access to Aqua Park. Reservations are required.

View Lake Travis from Above

Fly like a bird and enjoy the views at Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. While here you’ll experience unparalleled thrills, fantastic scenery and the adventure of a lifetime on the longest zipline in the Lone Star State. The admission fee includes a three-hour guided tour with five ziplines, equipment, boat transportation and water. Those that rather stay on level ground can enjoy all day access to the private lake front property where picnicking, playing games and relaxing in a hammock take priority.

Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions are still in place. While many marinas, park facilities and waterparks continue to open, it is best to plan ahead, reserve early, and check the facility’s website before venturing out.
