Spring into March with these Austin area events

With the luck of the Irish just a few weeks away and spring break on the horizon there’s no shortage of great family events to take advantage of in March. And, best of all most events are either free or under $15. Which means they are cash-friendly and will keep your entertainment budget intact. From historical and holiday celebrations to parades and expos we’ve got your family fun covered. Here’s our list, enjoy!

Chili, a parade, and a car show

Texas Humane Heroes Chili Cook-off, March 2. This 10th annual fundraiser for Texas Humane Heroes Pet Adoption Centers features live music, vendors, raffle items, and delicious bowls of Texas red chili. The event kicks-off at noon and runs until 4 p.m. at Texas Humane Heroes in Leander. This is a family and dog friendly event. Admission is $15. Children 8 years and under are free. Tickets are available at HumaneHeroes.org/events. Proceeds from the event benefits the organization’s animal rescue efforts.

Texas Independence Day Parade, March 2. Join the city of Austin on Saturday, March 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon for a grand celebration down South Congress Avenue in honor of our state’s independence from Mexico in 1836. This year’s parade celebrates the 183rd birthday of Texas. Lawn chairs and Texas flags welcome! Free.

RockNRides Car Show, March 9. Head on out to Gupton Stadium in Cedar Park for the RockNRides Car Show. This fun for everyone free event take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features music, food, and anything on wheels. Spectators welcome. Cars will be judged in categories such as Best Classic Ford, Best Corvette, Best Mustang, Mayor’s Choice, Best of Show, and much more. Those wishing to participate can register their vehicle for $20. Prizes awarded in 30 categories.

Health and wellness, dinosaurs, Irish music

SXSW Wellness Expo 2019, March 9 & 10. Explore the world of health and wellness during this second annual South by Southwest event. It takes place at the Palmer Events Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features a Wellness Expo Stage, Conscious Conversations, a Fitness Stage, SXSW Wellness Circles and over 150 exhibitors including The Farm Project, Branch Basics, Buddha Box, Everlywell, Four Sigmatic, Imperfect Produce and Natch Beaut with Jackie Johnson. Group fitness classes, exercise demos, workshops, and more. The event is free to SXSW badge holders and the general public with a SXSW Guest Pass.

Dinosaur Day, March 16. Learn about the world of dinosaurs during this hands-on event. Austin’s Science and Nature Center is hosting the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zilker Botanical Garden. Create a prehistoric planter, march in a dinosaur parade, and participate in a scavenger hunt. Adult non-resident admission is $3; $2 residents. Admission is $1 for children and seniors.

St. Patrick’s Day at Pioneer Farms, March 17. Irish dancers, music, and merriment abounds during Pioneer Farm’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This day-long event features international and local stars of Celtic music on two covered stages. Irish food and drink, a language workshop, laser tag, games 2U video trailer, and kids’ activities. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for kids ages 13 and under. Children 2 and under are free.

Spring break fun, kid’s expo

Spring Break at the Bullock Museum, March 18-March 22. 

There’s always something for kids to learn at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. And, during spring break week the museum is running a series of daily special family-friendly programs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Museum goers can attend the programs for free with a paid daily admission. The programs are also available for free to museum members. The schedule is as follows: Monday, March 18 -Bird’s Eye View; Tuesday, March 19-Shapes and Symbols; March 20-Creative America; Thursday, March 21-History Detectives and on Friday, March 22-Fly High.

Austin Kid’s Directory 4th Annual Spring Fair, March 23. Austin Kid’s Directory is hosting an informational expo for all parents and kids from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Austin Sports Center in Cedar Park. Vendors and advertisers will be on hand to provide information about area summer camps, child care, schools, and fitness and recreational programs and classes. Prizes, giveaways, hands-on activities, entertainers, and more. Admission and parking is free.

Stars and kites

Texas Night Sky Festival, March 30. Musical lyricist June Hershey got it right when she wrote the words “The stars at night, are big and bright, Deep in the Heart of Texas” in the hit song. And, it’s no wonder that the hill country town of Dripping Springs pays homage to the Lone Star state’s nighttime sky. After all, the Texas sky is indeed big, bright, and beautiful. The sky’s the limit during this bi-annual event with both daytime and nighttime activities. Solar observations, three planetariums, storytellers and musicians, Texas Dark Sky exhibits, smart lighting demonstrations, and food. Also, yoga under the stars, night sky photos tips, and a good old-fashioned stargazing party take center stage when the sun sets and the stars come out to play. This free event takes place from noon to 11 p.m. at Dripping Springs Ranch Park.

90th Annual ABC Zilker Park Kite Fest, March 31. This grand-daddy of kite festivals is the oldest in the nation and an awesome way to spend your Sunday with family and friends. With 90 years of experience under its belt, the festival offers plenty of activities for a fun-filled day of free family fun. Activities include the MossFest Children’s Concert, the Anteater Fun Run, and a day-long activity center for children of all ages. The Kite Contest begins at 1 p.m. Let your imagination soar and enter your favorite homemade creation. There’s eight different categories to register in. Registration is required to participate. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category. The ABC Kite Fest takes place in Zilker Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
