3 Construction Projects Putting North Austin on the Map

Starting from downtown Austin and wrangling your way up north, you’ll discover another part of the city known as north Austin. The area is already home to a large population of Austinites, trend-setting retail establishments, tasty dining destinations, and jobs. With its convenient location close to downtown and other suburban areas it’s easy to see why north Austin is the next up and coming place to be. Jobs are plentiful in the Austin Metro Area and new development projects never seem to end. So, let’s take a look at three new projects that will change the shape and landscape of north Austin in the next five years.

Project #1: Tech Giant Apple to construct new north Austin campus

Though Apple is already home to two facilities in Austin, the company’s plan to build a third location on 133 acres in north Austin will be its largest. The site of the new campus is less than one mile from its current location off Parmer Road at Riata Vista. The $1 billion investment is part of Apple’s plans to expand U.S. operations. Which is great news for the north Austin area. With the announcement comes the opportunity for the area to reach new heights and establish worldwide status as a major tech hub. It also means 5,000 new jobs. And, that’s just the beginning. Apple is forecasting that the facility will have the capacity to accommodate 15,000 employees. As Apple expands their business, the new campus will house jobs in engineering, R&D, operations, finances, sales, and customer service.

Site preparations for the campus will start this year. However, the project is expected to take three years to complete. According to news sources, Apple plans to dedicate two-thirds of the campus’ site to office space and research and development. The company is also preserving 50 acres of open space. And, the new campus will also conform with Apple’s commitment to the environment. It will run on 100 percent renewable energy.

Project #2: Austin’s First Major League Soccer Stadium

When you hear large crowds chanting the ever-popular words Olé, Olé, Olé that could only mean one thing—soccer. And, its arrival to north Austin could be a game changer. Austin FC is the official name of the city’s first MLS team and the 27th team to join the league. It is also the city’s first professional sports team. For those unfamiliar with the area, the 24-acre piece of property slated for the new stadium is located at 10414 McKalla Place, near The Domain. The first-rate stadium and entertainment venue also includes a public park and open space. Officials expect to break ground this year. When complete in the spring of 2021 the stadium will seat 20,000 people.

Economically speaking, the city expects to gain from the deal. The $225 million price tag for the new stadium will not cost Austin taxpayers a dime. Precourt Sports Ventures is fitting the bill for the project and will pay its operating expenses. Under the terms of the agreement with the city, Precourt Sports will lease the property and pay $550,000 in annual payments. They will also support the community through monetary donations to a variety of charitable organizations. For example, the city’s youth soccer programs will receive substantial contributions to support soccer clinics and camps, youth scholarship programs, and a health and wellness foundation. In addition to creating jobs, officials are hoping that the future stadium will serve as an incentive for future development in north Austin.

Project #3: City of Cedar Park’s Bell Boulevard Redevelopment Project

A short distance from north Austin and the master-planned community of Travisso, the city of Cedar Park is no stranger to development. The new 40-acre mixed-use development is just one more project taking the growing north Austin suburb another step into the future. Currently, city officials are working with Red Leaf Properties to design a plan for its Bell Boulevard District. As a place to be and be seen, the project will attract the trendy. With its up and coming status expect chic restaurants and retail shops, and entertainment venues for the entire family. It will also house offices, residences, parks, and a library. Located in the heart of Cedar Park, in its heyday, the area close to the Bell Boulevard District served as the city’s original downtown area. The pedestrian-friendly two-phase development will begin in the latter part of 2019 and take five years to complete.
