Score Big with Grilled Pizzas for your Super Bowl Bash

Food, Lifestyle - glory - Jan 19, 2018

Make your super bowl party the best ever this year with freshly grilled pizzas from your Travisso backyard barbecue grill. You’ll have fun thinking outside of the box, well, the pizza box that is to create fresh gourmet pizzas hot off your barbecue grill. Kick-off your party and score big with your guests when you serve perfectly crisp, smoky-flavored grilled pizzas. There’s nothing better than slightly charred crust and perfectly melted bubbly cheese. Touchdown!

In Texas backyards are year-round barbecue havens. Mildly warm temperatures throughout the winter let us grill just about any time of the year. Except maybe this week when temperatures dipped into the teens. But, shrug off the chill, and start planning now. All you will need is fresh ingredients, a little dose of creativity and a sturdy grill. You can use either a charcoal or gas grill to make your grilled pizzas.  However, if you are in the market to purchase one, check out this comprehensive buying guide from Jen Reviews titled, “How to Choose a Grill, According to Science—12 Factors to Consider.”

How to make grilled pizzas the star of your super bowl party

The base of the pizza is where you need to start. And, the question is frozen or fresh dough?  Though, some people may be intimated by making fresh dough, it really is very easy. Check out this simple to follow Betty Crocker Pizza Crust recipe. Its minimal ingredients and easy instructions make it foolproof. Want to roll it out thick or thin? The recipe also includes expert tips on how to get the right results.

If you don’t want to tackle making your own dough, there are plenty of options and brands available. I recently bought a frozen pizza dough that came in three varieties: Garlic and herb, plain, and whole wheat. The garlic and herb variety was flavorful. A flavored dough is also another way to layer additional flavor into your grilled pizzas. If you are unsure about a specific product, check out the user reviews first. Delicious sauces, meats, fresh toppings and cheese

From delicious sauces, fresh veggies and meats, to innovative toppings and gourmet cheeses, there’s no limit. And, ready-made store-bought sauces make the planning and prep work much easier with fantastic results. The goal here is to keep it simple. Remember, less is more, and when grilling pizzas this rule reigns. It is best to have your toppings prepped and ready to go before you begin grilling. One guide I found on how to grill pizzas was from the folks at Weber Grill. Check out this blog for simple tips and tricks to grilled pizza success.

Now, for the fun–making the pizzas. The possibilities here are endless. Here’s a few options for each of the categories listed below.

  • Sauces: You can easily make your own with a can of tomatoes, garlic, onions and basil or purchase one from the store. But, there are a lot of different sauces that can be used as the base for your pizzas. A few of the many sauces and dressings that can be used to add a flavor boost to your pizzas include pesto, Alfredo, pesto, barbecue, ranch, salsa, Caesar and artichoke. A mixture of olive oil, garlic, and parmesan cheese also makes a great paste for a pizza base. Or, experiment on your own and use a variety of flavored oils and seasonings to mix up a one-of-a-kind flavor base.
  • Meats: Try putting sausage and pepperoni on the back burner and use other meats on your grilled pizzas such as barbecue or roasted chicken, bacon, Canadian bacon, salami, shrimp or prosciutto. However, a word of caution, be careful when adding cured meats such as salami and prosciutto. Their high salt content may overpower if you add too much.
  • Fresh toppings: Olives, green or red peppers, banana peppers, spinach, broccoli, pineapple, caramelized onions, red onions, mushrooms, artichokes, grilled corn, jalapeño, fresh tomato slices, sun dried tomatoes, basil, oregano, roasted garlic, rosemary, red pepper flakes.
  • Cheeses: When you choose a cheese or a combination of cheeses for your pizzas remember that the melting varieties work best. Mozzarella, hands down is the winner in this category. However, there are six other cheeses that when combined with mozzarella form the perfect balance to top your pizza.
  • Flavorful combinations: Chicken bacon ranch; barbecue chicken, cheddar cheese, red onion; spinach, chicken, artichoke; taco pizza, Greek, or Mediterranean; shrimp scampi pizza and more.
