Eight Reasons Why I Love Austin and Why You Will Too

Lifestyle - glory - May 14, 2018

The city of Austin tops the list as the #1 city in the U.S. to live says U.S. News and World Report. And, an estimated range of 150-160 people move into the metro area on a daily basis. After all, I moved from Chicago five years ago, and like most of Austin’s recent transplants, we’re here to stay. So, what’s the attraction? Primarily cost of living is reasonable and the robust job market is fueled by major tech corporations continuing to locate here.

But, there are plenty of reasons why Austin is a great place to live. When you are here long enough, I’m sure you’ll be able to form your own list. But, until then, here’s my list.

Austin has small town charm and less people. The fact is Austin has a certain quaint small city charm. It has all the amenities of a big city but nestled in between are unique businesses, shops, and one-of-a-kind stops. In 2017 Austin’s population was estimated at 966,860. However, it swells up to close to 2 million when the five-counties that make up Austin’s Metro area are included. Those counties are Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell. Compare that to the population of Chicago. The World Population Review estimates Chicago’s population in 2017 was 2.736 million. But, you have to look at the big picture. The Chicago metro area including the suburban areas of Joliet and Naperville had an estimated 2017 population of 9,504,753.

There’s no snow. Here’s where the deciding factor lies for us northerners. Specifically snow. It doesn’t snow in Austin. Ok, for those that say “yes, it does, it did this year.” Let’s define snowfall. By my definition, in order for snowfall to be official, it should snow at least 1 inch. It should also remain on the ground for at least eight hours or longer. Therefore, the average amount of snowfall in Austin is 0. Compare that to the average U.S. city that receives 26 inches of snow annually. Austin also boasts 228 days of sun. The annual rainfall is 34.25 inches and the average temperature is 69.4°F. However, it is hot in the summer. For a snapshot of Austin’s weather by month click here.

The vibe is awesome. Attributing to Austin’s eclectic vibe is the city’s music scene. Many local Austin bands can be found playing on Sixth Street. However, if it’s music you seek, you can find it just about anywhere in Austin and beyond. But I like to mix it up and visit the city’s theatres, art galleries and hundreds of festivals celebrating food, wine and craft beers.

A laid back attitude. People in here aren’t always in a hurry. We actually wait for traffic lights to give the walk signal before proceeding to cross the street. And, then there’s the pedicabs. This laid back mode of transportation fills the streets of downtown Austin and also provides an extra dose of flair. They’re also a fun way to get around.

Parking in downtown on Sunday. It’s free and you can actually find one.

You can actually get to the airport. With the recent road improvements to Highway 71 Austin’s Bergstrom International Airport is much easier to get to these days. Once inside the airport, it is also extremely easy to know where you are. All you have to do is follow the sounds of the live music and smell the barbecue. But, aside from the visitor perks, terminals are close together and don’t require a pair of track shoes to get to. There’s also reasonably-priced food, plenty of seating and budget-friendly parking rates.

Austin is in the state of Texas. And, that means everything’s bigger here including the state itself. The big advantage is that there are miles and miles of open spaces and places to explore in the state. For a list of day and weekend trips in the Lone Star state All Across Texas is an excellent resource and planning guide. To explore the state’s natural beauty and recreational areas visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website. Their annual pass is a great bargain. The state is also home to 14 national designations including two national parks.

The Texas Hill Country is a short drive from the city. For recreation and weekend destinations, there is nothing better than the Texas Hill Country. Restaurants, shopping, wine excursions, wedding destinations, events, and live music abound. And, there’s also kayaking, hiking, swimming, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. My personal favorite time of the year is to go in the spring when the bluebonnets are in full bloom from mid-March to April.

5 Advantages of Purchasing an Inventory Home

Buying a Home - glory - Mar 6, 2018

Looking for a new home?  Are you ready to move in now? Do you want to forgo the building process? If you answered “yes” to all three of those questions, you may be looking at purchasing an inventory home or sometimes called a “spec” home. If you are unfamiliar with the term it is a new home that is either currently under construction or completely finished by the builder. The term means speculative home for sale. A builder typically builds a home on property that he owns without a predetermined homebuyer. In many cases the homebuyer does not choose color schemes or fixtures in the home. An inventory home is a stress-free way to get the home of your dreams quickly.

Why you should purchase an inventory home

An inventory home is move in ready. The biggest advantage of purchasing an inventory home is that it’s move-in ready. But, in some cases the builder may have started the construction of the home and sets a future completion date. However, the wait is usually not long.

The home is brand new. The big advantage here is the “new house” smell and that you are the first to live in the house.

You can view home the home as is. It is much easier to walk through a brand new home if it is already finished than viewing it on a blueprint. Since the home is already completed, you also have the opportunity to inspect or check out every nook and cranny. You will also know if it is the right fit. Fitting in your furniture and accessories are far much easier to envision when you already know what your home looks like. You will also be able to check the quality and craftsmanship of the home.

There is no building process. If time is of the essence, then purchasing an inventory home is the way to go. Typically, if you were to build the home of your dreams from the bottom up, it could take anywhere from 8-10 months. In some cases the process can be longer.  If you know you don’t have that kind of time, it may be best to view only inventory homes.

No guesswork involved. Since the home is already complete, the stress of choosing the color scheme, paint, countertops, and fixtures is non-existent. Trained designers have already done the work for you. However, in some cases, depending on where the builder is in the process, the homebuyer may be able to personalize their space by choosing those items. The question here is, do you want to? A benefit of buying an inventory home is not having to go through the Design Center process.

Eggtastic Ways with Eggs for Spring

Food, Lifestyle - glory - Mar 1, 2018

Eggs don’t have to be edible to be incredible. Eggs in any form are a great way to celebrate spring. Of course, the most preferred way is to eat them. And, oh there are so many ways. But, there are also so many creative ways to use them to decorate your home during spring. In this case, however, you’ll have to turn to the decorative varieties such as glass, ceramic, or even paper.

First, let me cover a few ways you can make and eat them. By far, the best way to make and serve eggs is deviled. No springtime celebration is complete without deviled eggs on your Travisso table. What’s even better is that there is more than one way to make them. There’s always the classic deviled egg recipe. This year, though, give your guests a mouth-watering experience by serving a few variations of this springtime tradition.

Here, in Texas, you’ll find that smoked beef brisket takes center stage for Easter dinner. If you are new here or just haven’t been here long enough to know we add guacamole, bacon, jalapenos, chipotle, and pimiento cheese to just about everything. Maybe, that’s an exaggeration but it sure seems like it. So, for an Easter dinner fit for a Texan complement your brisket with these deviled egg variations: Guacamole, Bacon Jalapeno, Chipotle Deviled Eggs, and even Pimiento Cheese. Check out the recipes here in addition to other tasty combinations. Dress them up and make them pretty by adding sprigs of fresh herbs such as dill and chives. Serve them on white or pastel plates for a show stopping presentation.

Or, start your springtime celebration with a savory quiche or spring frittata. There’s plenty of options. Make your egg dishes shine with fresh asparagus, spinach or zucchini then add a variety of fresh herbs. Check out this list of frittata and quiche recipes great for any celebration.

Colorful displays using eggs

You can spruce up your Easter table with decorations using eggs as the focal point. Decorating your Easter table doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly. You can use the real deal or use decorative varieties such as glass, ceramic, or those made of papier-mâché.

If you want to use the real deal colored eggs is the way to go. Coloring eggs is a family tradition in my family and a great activity to do with kids, and they love it. Every Easter I couldn’t wait to dip hard-boiled eggs into pastel colors to make pretty rainbow combinations. Then, we put them in a bowl and served them for dinner. For a simple decoration instead of using a bowl, put them in a wired basket and line it with a colorful floral napkin. Buy more than one basket and spread them throughout your table. But, if you want a new idea on how to color eggs here’s a great way to create beautiful color combinations using ties (for decoration only). Check it out here.

To create additional décor and save money look through your cabinets for containers that you may already have. Baskets, three-tier dessert plates, platters, glass containers, jars, and vases can all be used as bases for your centerpieces. Or, buy several glass jars in varying sizes and fill them with decorative eggs from a local craft store and top with floral sprigs. You can also purchase decorative bird nests and robin’s eggs for a rustic more natural look. But, for a truly special tablescape add votive candles, candlesticks or lanterns in colors that coordinate with your table linens. Use your imagination and remember inspiration is everywhere.

Candice Roy Brings Home the Silver

Community - glory - Feb 12, 2018

Candice Roy, Travisso’s lifestyle director, was recently presented with a Silver Award for Best Lifestyle Director in the nation. The winning announcement came during the 2018 National Association of Home Builder’s Sales and Marketing Awards last month in Orlando. The annual awards celebration is the association’s most prestigious event and honors the best of the best in the building industry nationwide. And, at Travisso we couldn’t be more proud of Candice and the lifestyle program she creates for our residents.

Events, childrens’ activities, clubs, OH MY!

The Travisso lifestyle director position falls under the helm of Travisso’s Homeowners Association located in The Palazzo. In her role, Candice is instrumental in ensuring Travisso’s lifestyle program is top-notch and meets the needs of its residents. As she continues to build the community’s program, her top priority is to provide a foundation on which to grow. “There’s a huge difference between planning the communications and marketing events for a couple hundred homes versus a couple thousand,” says Candice. “You have to have an understanding of what’s to come so you can prepare. Anyone can throw a party but it takes an understanding of the industry to grow a community. You need to be able to know where you are and where you want to go.”

Candice has laid the groundwork and is moving fast forward with fun, unique, and active programs tailor-made for the community. Since starting her position last June, events, fitness classes, and clubs meetings have increased significantly. Every month residents can choose from 10-12 events, 22 fitness classes, and 12 club meetings. Field trips are also on the rise. Starting this year there are plans to have one trip per quarter. From Palazzo Poker to Bunco, to Ladies Coffee, to Yoga and Tai-Chi there’s something for everyone. Whether you want to join a book club, take a walk with friends, or meet someone new there’s always something to do.

The Travisso lifestyle—creating experiences, connecting people

Though there are many facets of her position, what she loves the most is to create experiences that connect people and for families to enjoy them together. “Events are never a one-size-fits-all, you have to continually provide unique opportunities to bring people together.” For example, her favorite event was when the community came together to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. “It was an event that took on a life of its own,” she says. “The atmosphere was so loving and joyous which is something you can’t force.”

However, the key to her success is her ability to look beyond event planning. “In the industry you’ll see that the majority of lifestyle directors focus on events for their neighborhood,” she says. “I like to look at how I can help the residents and offer a value-added service to the Travisso lifestyle.” But, the best part of being Travisso’s lifestyle director, says Candice, “is having a front row seat to watch the families in the community blossom.”
