How to incorporate running into your family’s lifestyle

For many of us running is an activity that usually isn’t listed as something fun to do. But, guess what, it can be. Are you still trying to figure out how you are going to make good on your New Year’s resolution to lose weight? Well, if you’re not sure where to start, here’s one solution that might help you get going and keep you going through the year. Instead of trying to lose weight, why not adopt running as a fun family activity that benefits both yourself and the entire family?

If you have been wanting to get in shape one of the best ways to do that is to run. It is actually a lot of fun and a great cardio exercise. And, when it comes down to it, just about everyone can do it. That’s where you get your family involved and make running a family activity. This healthy family affair is gaining speed as one of the best ways to spend family time together. Developing a passion for running with your children at a young age can instill a healthy lifestyle that may just be lifelong. Just 30 minutes for adults and 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children will set you all on your healthy way.

The benefits of running are enormous

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services everyone can benefit from physical activity. The benefits of running are enormous. For adults those benefits include weight loss, a boost in confidence, it can eliminate depression, relieve stress, and improve sleep. In women, it can lower the risk of breast cancer. Children that run most likely will be able to fight child obesity and increase both their agility and confidence.  It can also help children improve their performance in other sports such as football, soccer, and gymnastics, dancing, and cheerleading.

And, there’s no better place to start than in your own community. Designed for active lifestyles, Travisso’s hiking and biking trails are convenient and close to home. All you need to do is equip yourself and your family with sturdy running shoes. Then, map out a Travisso trail route, set a schedule and start out slow—one to two times a week will do. You should also set a goal such as running in a family fun run.

Start your New Year off on the right foot with a family fun run

1K and 5K family fun runs are very popular in communities such as Leander and Cedar Park and are usually sponsored by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. However, the Austin area’s status as the 12th Healthiest City in the U.S. means that there are races almost every weekend throughout the Austin area. With so many options in the area, you’ll be sure to find just the right one for your family.

Just a few things to note about family fun runs. First of all, they are kid and dog friendly (must be on a leash). They are also designed with fun in mind. And, the finish lines are victory celebrations filled with family activities, food, music, goodie bags, and free giveaways. There are also entrance fees which vary depending on the race. Entrance fees for kids usually run around $10 and include a T-shirt. And, the other thing you should know is that you don’t have to run. Walkers are always welcome.

Note: Travisso trail maps are available at The Palazzo and at the Information Center.
